The LED chandelier bulb teardown

FEIT LED chandelier bulb is qualified ES in the USA. But after using, it has many problem.

Seller sheet:

    • Lasts Over 22.8 Years
    • 40 Watt Replacement
    • Color 3000K

    User complained from Amazon [1]

I have puchased 15 of these bulbs from Costco. (5 packs of 3). I have had to return 6 of the bulbs (2 packs) within 6 months of purchase (that's a 40% failure rate). the bulbs that work, work great, but a 40% falure rate is a difficult pill to swallow. Fortunately, Costco has a great return policy.
I have tried to contact Feit Electric customer service, but have received no response.

I bought two packs of these in September 2014. As of May 2016 less than 2 years later, 4 out of 6 bulbs are "burnt out". I don't know what the correct nomenclature for an LED bulb is, but they don't work any more. Some of them blink on and off, others just don't turn on at all.

They were pretty good when they worked. The light output pattern is a little odd, but we had them in ceiling fans.

The item I received was not the item pictured

I've bought these bulbs for the outdoor expecting for them to last many years, if not 20+ as advertised. There is a nice picture of an outdoor lamp post on the package, so I though to be all right. After 1 year one bulb went bad; after 2 years another. The third one is hanging there... for how long? I won't buy FEIT electric anymore in my life...

We purchased 2 packs of 3 bulbs (6 total bulbs). One bulb has stopped working of the in about 18 months. I am not able to return the bulb for a replacement. The comment about the lights lasting 22.8 years of normal use appears to be a little over stated.

After two years, we now have two out six bulbs starting to blink on and off. So much for 22.8 years. For what these cost they should last much longer. I would not recommend these bulbs.

These lightbulbs never worked at all! Tried them in 5 different lights in 5 different outlets and they never worked once. Complete waste of money.

What is wrong with that?  Lets check the construction.

At only $5 each (3 for $15), 90+ CRI, and dimmable, the FEIT LED chandelier bulb is another excellent entry in the candelabra light market.

(Note: The industry seems to use the terms “candelabra” and “chandelier” interchangeably for the bulb itself. Both have an E12 base, often called a “candelabra base”.)
Like the Cree candelabra bulb reviewed last week, the FEIT bulb is dimmable and has an excellent 92 CRI color quality:
FEIT LED Chandelier bulb light spectrum
It has a swoopy bulb cover which looks nice. However, the light appearance itself isn’t as elegant as the Cree’s, in part because it uses 5 separate LEDs. To accommodate the multiple LEDs,  the light guide’s base is larger and has a sort of two-stage lens:

The end result is a light shape that looks quite different from the Cree’s. I personally prefer the Cree’s light-saber-like appearance, but the FEIT has other things going for it, as we’ll see.
Unique among LED bulbs that I’ve torn down, the FEIT chandelier bulb has a glass bulb cover. This may be because glass is cheaper than plastic in complex shapes, or so I’ve been told. The internal plastic light guide is screwed to the top of the bulb case, covering the five LEDs. Here’s a photo with the cover removed (aka broken):

By looking at the plastic guide next to the five LEDs (below), we can see why the guide has to be so wide: 5 discrete LEDs take up a lot more space than a single multiple-die LED like the Cree bulb uses.

Notice the positive attachments made by the screws on the light guide and also the silicon glue on the bulb cover. Compare these to Cree where the light guide is held in place by the cover which snaps on. The Cree had a faint hum at some dimming levels; The FEIT’s firmer attachments may be the reason it’s silent at all dimming levels.
The FEIT has a narrower dimming range than the Cree, and it doesn’t dim down to zero on my Lutron dimmer.
The components were tightly packed on the FEIT’s driver pc board, and also covered in potting material — another sound eliminator.
Here are the components with the compound removed. The power IC is barely visible between the two capacitors:

    And the IC exposed:

This could possibly be the Marvell 88EM8187 (PDF) but that’s just a guess.
The quality of  LED bulb over time is not so good! Damn!!!  Er, no one care the consumer?!
